"Jack Lindsay, the popular and versatile novelist, came into prominence in the latter part of the 'Twenties as a translator of the Greek and Latin classics such as "Theorcritos", "Catullus", and "Petronius". However, many of these translations were issued in limited fine editions and all have long been out of print: with the exception of his considerable contributions to the companion volume to the "Oxford Book of Greek Verse".
Here is the first publication of a new translation of "Longus' Daphnis and Chloe", in which Mr. Lindsay has excitingly revealed the naive simplicity and pastoral freshness of this great tale. The volume contains a long and scholarly essay in which the story is related to the life and times of its author, and Mr. Lindsay throws new and fascinating light on its significance within its cultural framework.
The text is decorated with fourteen reproductions of exceptionally fine woodcuts and the essay is illustrated with contemporary material.
It is the aim of the publishers to give the public books which combine great literary or historical interest with first class production at a modern price: we believe that this, our first volume, will not only make an ideal gift book for the discerning reader and be of special interest to scholars, but is also a collector's piece at a popular price."
