"At the customs hall in Frankfurt the sniffer dogs showed a particular interest in a brown suitcase. But they were not on the scent of drugs, but of warm flesh; for there inside lay two birds, suffocating, their plumage crumpled and their tail feathers pulled off. They were Golden Shoulders, one of the most rare, beautiful and valuable species in the world - and all the officer could do was close the suitcase, shrug his shoulders and wave the passenger on to his connecting flight to Amsterdam.
When Barrett, a top television reporter, was sent to Cane Island to investigate the disappearance of a customs inspector, he had no idea that he would be opening a Pandora's Box of smuggling and vice operations, of personal and ruthless vendettas and an impossible love affair. Nor that he would be unmasking the villains behind the needless cruelty to these exotic birds.
As Barrett and his cameraman arrive at the provincial town of Marlin on the Barrier Reef, they are met with a wall of silence and hostility, broken only by Barrett's former girlfriend who warns them to turn back now before it's too late! But Barrett is only concerned about getting his story and survives each danger in true James Bond style.
Against a backcloth of coral reefs, wildlife and fauna, Max Grant has set a compelling and moving thriller which demonstrates the struggle between the base powers of man and his innocent victims. It is a story of love and beauty winning through against man's cruelty and carnage. A most impressive and exhilarating first novel."
