"Ever since specimens of the genus Fuchsia were brought back from South America in the middle of the eighteenth century these plants have occupied an important place in horticulture. The great range of forms, from dwarf shrubs to tree-like types twice as tall as a man, and the vast numbers of varieties produced by interbreeding, have ensured that the cultivation of fuchsias has attracted an enthusiastic following over the years.
Here, for the first time, detailed, descriptions of some 2000 species, varieties and cultivars are given in one volume, covering their colour, foliage and growth habit. Each description contains details about such things as the raiser and date of registration and growing considerations such as watering, amount of sunshine and methods of training. In addition, there is a general introduction which gives information on history, cultivation and trained types.
Thus the book will act both as an introduction for the newcomer to the fascinating world of fuchsia cultivation, enabling him to see which variety of fuchsia can be grown successfully in any given situation, and also as a reference work, a source of information for those who have been growing fuchsias for years. The more knowledgeable grower will learn more about his plants and get more enjoyment out of them through reading the Lexicon.
The book is illustrated with almost 200 colour photographs of fuchsia blooms, comparing the sizes, shapes and colours available in this, the most surprising and variable of plants.
The author brings some twenty-five years of fuchsia-growing experience to the book - twenty of those spent in professional horticulture. In 1976 he became the honorary secretary and honorary treasurer of the British Fuchsia Society and has spent many years compiling the information that is included in this book.
This book complements the highly successful 'Fuchsias in Colour' as a worthy addition to the Baldford gardening list."
