"To every cricketer, Australian players are both a challenge and a puzzle. A challenge because Australians have brought such distinguished and varied talents to the game. A puzzle because it is always difficult to reconcile the unceasing flow of great players with such a scantily populated country. Indeed, Australians have achieved such a reputation as cricketers that it never surprises enthusiasts all over the world when some new phenomenon appears. Only a few years ago in England it was said that merely wearing an Australian cap was enough to mesmerise the opposition.
Bradman, McCabe, Miller, Simpson, Harvey, these and a score of other names represent cricket - the Australian way. They have contributed to this book for a purpose.
Their aim is to show youngsters the world over how to play the game. How to play cricket for enjoyment in social games and Test matches. How to play it hard, always striving to win, but never by unsportsmanlike play.
Cricket the Australian Way is often hard, but it is always fair. The authors tell of the gruelling pressure of Test matches and how to adapt to varying conditions in different countries. And they talk of the lighter moments and the friendships made.
Some of the contributors, like Sir Donald Bradman, are already legendary figures in the cricket world; others, like Dough Walters and Paul Sheahan are just beginning their careers. But from all of them the advice is clear: Study this book, work hard to improve, and you will enjoy your cricket more. It is a book for youngsters, but the contributors won't mind if the boy's fathers take a look at it too. It will be worth it. As Sir Donald Bradman says in his forward: "It's a good way, cricket - The Australian way".
