"The concepts and techniques basic to analyzing the uncertainty of human thought processes are of fundamental importance in all decision making for engineering and social sciences. Conventional mathematical and computational tools offer very little to aid the analysis of such uncertainty. An alternative mathematical method based upon the Fuzzy Set Theory has evolved over the past two decades; the spectrum of applications of this new theory continues to expand as engineers and social scientists are confronted with new challenges and new technological innovations in the design and analysis of complex processes. "Introduction to Fuzzy Arithmetic" is the first book designed to provide a thorough and integrated introduction to the fundamentals of this subject with many possible applications.
In their approach to the subject, the authors have been guided by the growing importance of having a firm foundation in the definition of fuzzy numbers based on the level of confidence. They have introduced many original concepts, such as that of hybrid numbers, which are both possibilistic and probabilistic in nature. The authors include many carefully worked-out illustrative examples to help the reader develop a thorough foundation in the use of this material. Several mathematical operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, max -min operations, and convolution and deconvolution are developed. A large variety of novel concepts and tools such as agreement index and fuzzy numbers of type 2 and of higher dimensions are introduced. Several combinatorics with uncertain numbers such as integer modulo operation, fuzzy trigonometric function, and fuzzy hyperbolic function are given. The book also exploits the catastrophe theory using fuzzy concepts.
Lotti A. Zadeh in his Forward says, "...exposition of these and other techniques is thorough and well organized and points to a wide variety of applications in systems analysis, decision making under uncertainty...In the years ahead, fuzzy arithmetic is likely to become an important part of numerical analysis and widely used tool for dealing with uncertainty in a computationally effective way." "Introduction to Fuzzy Arithmetic" has been written to realize this objective."
