"The fighter was the most romantic of all combat aircraft, from the earliest scouts of the First World War through to the 1970s when its once-clear identity was lost as multi-combat functions were expected of its costly successors.
Through profiles of some of the outstanding aircraft, this book traces the evolution of the fighter through 60 years, from the stick and string machines of the first hesitant aerial combats to the ultra-sophisticated aircraft of the supersonic era, from the Fokkers and Nieuports, Camels and Pups, the Hurricane and Spitfire, Messerschmitt Bf 109 and the Focke-Wulf Fw 190, Mustang and Zero of the Second World War, to the Mirage and Phantom.
Each Chapter recalls the inception of a classic type, describes its development, discusses its qualities and service career. The author draws on his experience, to describe machines in perspective, and write with insight of the men who build and flew them.
Fighters is illustrated with over 100 drawings and photographs, many in colour, with cutaway drawings of the principal aircraft."
