"A welcome new story about the Mitchell family, who were first introduced to young readers in 'The Gift-Wrapped Pony', this young author's first novel. The Mitchells live in the Tasmanian countryside and run a Jersey stud and dairy property. They lead a busy life, yet Val and Lesley and Ian find time for sheer enjoyment, too - especially when they are with their ponies. It is Lesley and Ian who find a neighbouring farmer's newly-born calf on Shale Hill, abandoned by its mother. It is a runt - 'Skerrick', they christen it, so small that their neighbour decides it is not worth saving. But Lesley cannot leave the calf to die; and so she embarks on her plan to care for it in secret: a simple decision that leads to untold complications, especially when eccentric Uncle Arthur comes to live in the cottage on Shale Hill. How Lesley finds her own solution to her seemingly insuperable problem is the theme of this absorbing new novel."
