"The four children of Royalist Colonel Beverley have been orphaned during the Civil War. They live in the care of a relative at their home, Arnwood, in the New Forest. A faithful forester, Jacob Armitage, learning that the victorious Roundheads are searching for King Charles the First and intend to burn down Arnwood, conceals the two boys and two little girls in his cottage. He pretends they are his grandchildren and teachers them to cook, hunt and tend the garden and livestock. After the old man's death they are able to fend for themselves with the help of a gypsy boy. Edward, the eldest, becomes a self-reliant, gallant youth. Although he cannot entirely disguise his good breeding and Royalist sympathies, he is befriended by the Roundhead Superintendent and saes the life of his daughter Patience Heatherstone. After many adventures, in the Forest he joins the exiled monarch Chales the Second in Paris. Eventually, at the Restoration, he comes once more into his inheritance and wins the lovely Patience for his bride."
