"To Laura Hewitt, India was an exciting challenge - an India of extravagant princes, of the British Raj, of the first rumblings of disquiet and tension smouldering silently from state to state.
Laura had travelled there as the companion of her indulged newly-wed young cousin Emily - trying, on the journey, to suppress both her love for Charles, and her resentment of Emily who had stolen Charles from her.
Their destination was the kingdom of Oudh, to the vast zemindari estate of Charles's unknown brother, Oliver Erskine. And even before Laura had set food on land she heard tales, rumours, conjecture about Oliver Erskine, the ZEMINDAR".
